October 16 is World Food Day, which is dedicated to the increased awareness of global hunger issues.

As we approach World Food Day, our attention remains focused on East Africa, facing its worst drought in 60 years and leaving 12 million people uncertain about where they will get food. Catholic Relief Services is in East Africa providing assistance to communities in need.

In Kenya, CRS is providing newly arrived refugees with water and sanitation facilities at a new camp in Dadaab, as well as aiding the surrounding communities impacted by the influx of refugees and the drought itself.
In Somalia, through our partners, CRS has been able to get some aid into the stricken areas and is assisting displaced families with basic necessities.
In Ethiopia, CRS is leading a program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development involving nine other humanitarian organizations to distribute food to more than 1 million people. CRS is also providing families with emergency water filtration systems while working to repair broken water systems.

CRS has resources about hunger available for you to use in your classroom or with your youth group. Through these resources and activities young people will journey in solidarity with the poor and hungry in our world.
