Fatima Shrine in the Local News

A Catholic shrine in Massachusetts, west of Boston, has a rosary so large it’s made of boulders and chains.
The heart-shaped rosary at Holliston’s Our Lady of Fatima Shrine is 950 feet long. According to the World Record Academy, it’s the largest sculpture of rosary beads on Earth.
“They decided to think big and to create a rosary not necessarily with a record of size in mind but a place that people could walk through,” said Father Carl Chudy, the shrine’s co-director. “When we hold a rosary, we go through it with our hands. This is a chance for people to be on a kind of pilgrimage.”
The rosary was built with large rocks taken from the construction of Interstate 495.
“It was the early 70s, they were just digging up for the project to build I-495,” Father Chudy said. “They had gotten permission to come and take these large boulders from there, one by one, in a pickup truck. Connecting the boulders, they implemented an anchor and chain that came from a battleship, actually, the John F. Kennedy.”

| Our beautiful shrine lends itself to the beauty and wonder of God that is reflected in all creation. We initiated the Laudato Si Project of the Fatima Shrine. The keystone encyclical by Pope Francis in 2015, Care for Our Common Home, At our shrine, we speak often of our Fatima Bee Project and efforts to increase pollinators in our community, the restoration of Meadowlands in certain areas of the shrine, and efforts to increase monarch butter/fly populations at the shrine. We want to connect our efforts at Fatima Shrine with the prominent Catholic Movement of the LS Movement, which is active worldwide. We will encourage your participation and prayer on different fronts. Take a look at the Laudato Si Movement website. |
- Fatima Bee Project – We have been promoting pollinators in our community through the Fatima Bee Project. This year, we are adding five new hives, a symbolic number of wholeness and unity in Jubilee. The new hives will be added in late April and early May 2025.
- Meadowland Restoration—We are converting a significant part of the shrine to meadowland restoration. This means stopping mowing these sections and allowing them to naturally regrow with native grasses and plants, supporting local species and reminding us of the fragility of creation, which affects so many worldwide, particularly the poorest. It’s a work in progress, and we hope to add some vegetation and wildflowers this year.
- Propagating the Monarch Butterfly Population – Over the last several years, we have enlisted some members of our shrine community to collect butterfly eggs on the shrine attached to Milkweed, raise the butterflies at home, and release them on the shrine afterward. It is an excellent teaching tool on the lifecycle of nature, and the caterpillar is a powerful symbol of resurrection.

Butterfly Garden in Remembrance of Those Who Died of Addiction

Our Lady of Fatima Shrine is embarking on a new prayer/memorial area. Some people who have lost loved ones to the current opioid crisis approached the shrine to create a Butterfly Garden of Remembrance. There will be the opportunity to honor your loved one who died with a memorial brick that would have the loved one’s name and be permanently placed in the garden. Knowing that a loved one left this world due to addiction is not easy. The garden will give family and friends a place to reflect and pray for any faith tradition. The donation per brick will be $100.Donations are partially tax-deductible. Proceeds cover the cost of making this garden; any balance is donated to Fatima Shrine.
