TOGETHER. BUILDING A MORE PEACEFUL WORLD.
I was born and raised in a predominantly Muslim country, Azerbaijan where many Christians, Jews and other religious groups live together. Even though we considered ourselves tolerant, I never personally witnessed religious leaders intentionally coming together (at a community level) to discuss interreligious similarities, differences, or common concerns. Typically, these kind of conversations were taking place on a grander level. For example, I remember watching the Archbishop of the Christian Church, the Sheik of the Caucasus Muslims, and a Jewish Rabbi meet and celebrate the friendships on television.
When I joined Peace Islands Institute in New York, the program which piqued my interest was the monthly Abraham’s Table Forum series. It was here that I saw sincere interfaith dialogues between ordinary people. During one event titled, “Freedom of Speech vs. Respect for the Sacred”, a rabbi, a priest and an imam discussed the differences and misconceptions about these religions and the real problems that people face daily. Their conversation compelled me to engage in a lively and productive conversation with the people around me.
In a world where religious prejudices are common and religious wars occur often, it is inspiring to witness people trying to understand each other and listening to other’s unique stories. In yet another interfaith event, “The Role of Religion in Women’s Freedom,” I was amazed to witness three highly educated and successful women (a college professor, a non-profit leader, and a founder of a religious organization,) represent Eastern Orthodoxy, Islam, and Judaism respectively. These women shared their own personal accounts of the common difficulties women face in the society, in the workplace and in the family. Their insights allowed me to finally understand how rights and freedoms operate in various religious texts and how they are interpreted by societies to shape the role of women.
These open conversations between people of different faiths happen because Peace Islands Institute provides a safe and peaceful atmosphere for everyone to connect. I am very happy to support an organization which welcomes varying viewpoints and promotes education, friendship and harmony.
I hope that you will join me,
Sevda Ismayilova-Karimova
